Rick Needham

Rick Needham is a Partner and Energy Sector Lead for The Rise Fund, responsible for sourcing and executing growth stage investments in the energy space that deliver both attractive financial returns and meaningful positive social or environmental benefits.

Prior to joining Rise, Rick was the Director of Energy and Sustainability for Google, where he led teams that invested in transformative, large-scale renewable energy projects, explored ways to accelerate energy access in emerging markets, and catalyzed actions to address climate change. Spearheading Google’s renewables project investing, Rick played a crucial role in channeling more than $2.5 billion into renewable energy projects around the world. Prior to Google, Rick was at DEKA Research where he led clean energy business development efforts and managed several technology development projects in clean energy, medical products, and robotics. Rick also worked as a consultant at Bain & Company and served for eight years as a nuclear submarine officer in the U.S. Navy. Rick currently serves on the boards of Fourth Partner Energy and CLEAResult. Rick holds a BS from the U.S. Naval Academy and an MS from MIT, both in Aerospace Engineering, as well as an MBA from HBS.
