I worked in film in London on four of the Harry Potter movies and it was on set of the Prisoner of Azkaban that I met my husband, Miles. When he wasn’t working on films, he lived in Dallas so after a two-year long distance relationship between Dallas and London, I moved to Texas. As soon as I arrived, I volunteered for the first AFI Dallas International Film Festival and I seemed to have worked in festivals, wearing many hats, ever since. Understanding the variety of roles needed to pull off a festival has helped me enormously as producer of this festival – it means I can act as air traffic control, but know what is needed to land the plane!
2. What is something unique from the U.K. that you like to bring and incorporate into your life here?
The National Health Service – it isn’t until you leave the U.K that you understand what an absolute treasure the NHS is. My husband and I are both self-employed so we get hit by the U.S healthcare system. I yearn for the NHS regularly.
3. Which of the films showcasing at EDTx do you connect with most and why?
I connect with the films that make me stop in my tracks and think: “oh wow, I never knew.” There is the impact of carbon emissions on the coral reefs in CHASING CORAL; the cumulative effect of our individual use of plastic on ocean life in A PLASTIC OCEAN; and the realization that one plastic straw could end up in a turtle’s nose in STRAWS. As a parent of two young children, I want to show them that we have a choice in how we treat our planet and they have the power to affect change by changing their habits. These films make you do that.
4. What do you want people to take away from this new eco-film festival experience?
The case for climate change is real. We are all responsible for this planet and we can play a role in protecting it for future generations. The mission for this festival is to turn awareness into action – so the takeaway is simple: LET’S ACT!
5. What does Earth Day mean to you?
We have one planet, let’s love on it.
Today is World Rainforest Day! Here are 5 Threats to our Rainforests and 5 Reasons We Need to Take Action Now The time is now to take action for the vital rainforests on our planet.
