March 30 , 7:00 pm - 9:30 pmFree
EarthxFilm, in collaboration with the Downtown Residents Council and the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum present COOKED: Survival by Zip Code. Director Judith Helfand will be in attendance for Q&A after the film.
What’s the best way to prepare for disaster? In today’s era of mega-storms, raging wildfires, and record breaking floods, that question is on the minds of many. In COOKED: Survival by Zip Code, a film inspired by Eric Kinenberg’s book HEAT WAVE: A Social Autopsy of Disaster in Chicago, director Judith A. Helfand carefully unpacks the topic. Helfand takes viewers on a journey from the deadly 1996 Chicago heat disaster to the extreme weather, extreme disparity and the politics of disaster that defines today’s modern era, posing the question: What if zip code was just a number and not a life-or-death sentence?
Director Bio: Peabody award winning filmmaker Judith A. Helfand is known for her ability to tell big stories of environmental justice, corporate misdeeds, and chemical exposure in a way that’s personal, resonant, quirky, and entertaining. Her films have been broadcasted on PBS, HBO, and the Sundance Channel.
