Emerson Miranda and Viviane Vieira Lopes are the first farmers in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo authorized to harvest and process fruit from the endangered juçara palm.

In the 1990s, the Brazilian government listed the Juçara palm as threatened due to overharvesting for its heart-of-palm.

Miranda and Lopes are now farming the tree’s berries in order to protect the plant from destruction.
