Messias Soares used to clear trees for farm owners in Juruti, Brazil, so the land could be plowed for agricultural purposes.

He purchased a plot of land in 2000 to grow cassava when his children realized there was more opportunity in agroforestry, the intentional integration of trees and shrubs into traditional agricultural systems. This process creates environmental, economic, and social benefits by maintaining the integrity of the land while still using it to grow and sell crops.
