Sustainability is a shared effort, and EarthX Half Earth Day—held every October to mark the halfway point to April’s Earth Day—demonstrates how collective action can make a real difference. Each year, the EarthX team collaborates with catering companies, chefs, and partners to ensure every detail of the event is as green as possible.

  • From the outset, single-use items are minimized. Disposable products are limited strictly to paper cocktail straws, bamboo skewers, and bamboo serving “boats.” All dessert plates (ceramic) and barware (glasses) are rented rather than purchased for one-time use. Menus are thoughtfully planned so that guests don’t need cutlery—a small change that saves countless gallons of water otherwise used in washing utensils.
  • Linen bar napkins and luncheon napkins are reused throughout the event; if supplies run low, recycled paper or linen-like paper napkins fill in responsibly. When paper plates or platters become necessary, they’re sourced from Sophistaplate—a manufacturer whose products are 100% compostable.
  • Plastic caterer’s serving utensils aren’t thrown away; instead, they’re cleaned for reuse or donated to street kitchens where they find new life. For any take-out needs for guests or staff, only recycled brown paper boxes—reminiscent of classic Chinese take-out containers—are used.
  • Food waste is kept to a minimum by delivering leftovers directly to street kitchens. Composting and recycling stations are clearly marked yet discreetly placed so guests can easily participate in sustainable practices during the event.
  • Local sourcing is another key component: chefs prioritize foodstuffs from nearby producers whenever possible. Lighting throughout the venue uses energy-efficient LED bulbs—including tree light balls—and Tiki torches illuminate perimeters while naturally repelling insects without pesticides.

EarthX Half Earth Day proves that with thoughtful planning and community collaboration, events can be both memorable and environmentally responsible. Every detail counts when sustainability is at stake—and together we can set new standards for green gatherings everywhere.
