Half-Earth Day®: Advancing a Vision for the Future of Life on Earth

EarthX brings people together to celebrate the Half-Earth vision, honor the importance of biodiversity, and build momentum toward Earthx2027.
What would it take to protect the incredible diversity of life on our planet?
That question lies at the heart of the Half-Earth Project, inspired by renowned biologist and naturalist E.O. Wilson. His vision calls for protecting half of Earth’s lands and seas to safeguard enough habitat for most species and preserve the planet’s biodiversity.
Each year, Half-Earth Day ® offers an opportunity to reflect on this vision and the work still ahead to protect the natural world.
The Vision Behind Half-Earth
Edward O. Wilson dedicated his life to advancing our understanding of the natural world. His research and writing helped shape modern biology and brought greater attention to the importance of biodiversity, the variety of life on Earth and the ecosystems that sustain it.
In his book Half-Earth: Our Planet’s Fight for Life, published in 2016, Wilson proposed an ambitious conservation goal: protecting half of the planet’s lands and seas to preserve the habitats that species need to survive.
His legacy continues through the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation and its Half-Earth Project, which advances biodiversity research, education, and conservation. Through scientific data and mapping tools, the project helps identify places where conservation efforts can have the greatest impact.

Why Half-Earth Day Matters
Protecting biodiversity is more than preserving individual species. Healthy ecosystems support the interconnected systems on which all life depends.
The Half-Earth vision challenges us to consider how we live alongside the natural world, which places are most important to protect, and how science, collaboration, and informed decision-making can help shape a more sustainable future.
Achieving meaningful environmental progress requires people and organizations across disciplines to work together. Scientists, conservationists, businesses, policymakers, educators, and communities all have a role to play.
EarthX Hosts the Half-Earth Day® Grand Reception
As an international environmental nonprofit, EarthX works to connect people and organizations across business, science, policy and environmental advocacy to advance solutions for a sustainable world.
The Half-Earth Day® Grand Reception reflects that mission by bringing together a community of leaders, changemakers and friends of the planet for an evening of conversation, connection and celebration.
Hosted by EarthX in Dallas, the moonlit garden gathering provides an opportunity to recognize progress, reflect on the challenges ahead, and build momentum toward Earthx2027, taking place April 20–22, 2027, at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas.
The reception is part of EarthX’s broader commitment to creating spaces where diverse perspectives can come together around shared environmental challenges and opportunities.
Experience the Power of Nature Through the Way of the Rain
The celebration of Half-Earth Day® also invites us to reconnect with the natural world through art and storytelling.
On October 22, 2026, EarthX will present the Texas premiere of The Way of the Rain – Hope for Earth: A Symphony for Our Planet at the Dallas Museum of Art. Created and directed by Sibylle Szaggars Redford, the multidisciplinary environmental film experience brings together imagery, music, and spoken word to celebrate the beauty and interconnectedness of our planet. The production features the final narration and spoken-word performance of Robert Redford.
The film screening is open to the public. While the Half-Earth Day® Grand Reception is invitation-only, community members are welcome to attend the screening and experience this celebration of our shared planet.

One Planet. A Shared Responsibility.
E.O. Wilson’s vision reminds us that the future of life on Earth depends on how we understand, value and protect the natural world.
Through Half-Earth Day®, EarthX celebrates the people and ideas helping advance that work—and the connections that can turn shared purpose into meaningful action.
As EarthX looks toward 2027, the message remains clear: protecting our planet is a collective effort, and building a sustainable future begins with recognizing that we are all part of the same living world.
