Girl Plus Environment is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a national network of more than 700 members across 35 states, with a strong concentration of college-aged participants and partnerships with universities, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Nearly 70 percent of members are students, positioning GPE at the intersection of youth leadership, environmental justice, and movement building.
Since its inception, GPE has evolved from a community-building initiative into a recognized leader in climate advocacy and organizing. Members have taken more than 2,000 collective climate actions, including participating in utility rate cases, submitting public comments, organizing campaigns, and leading local advocacy efforts. GPE’s work has contributed to tangible outcomes, such as helping to stop a proposed 12 percent energy rate increase in Georgia, supporting the creation of a $300,000 clean energy fund in Atlanta, and engaging hundreds of community members in air quality monitoring and environmental health advocacy in California.
As the organization matured, GPE formalized its leadership development and organizing model, training more than 50 femmes in climate and energy advocacy and supporting members
to design and lead their own community-based activations. These efforts have allowed GPE to move beyond awareness-building toward sustained civic engagement and leadership pipelines. GPE is currently in a period of strategic growth. Building on its proven track record, the organization is preparing to scale its impact through a national, chapter-based model anchored on college campuses. Guided by a multi-year strategic planning process, GPE aims to mobilize 10,000 Black and Brown femmes across 50 universities by 2030, positioning a new generation of leaders to shape climate policy, programs, and narratives nationwide
From its founding in 2019 to the present, Girl Plus Environment has remained grounded in community accountability, cultural relevance, and equity. Its evolution reflects both responsiveness to
community needs and a disciplined approach to building durable, people-powered climate leadership. To learn more, visit www.girlplusenvironment.org.
